Vinícius Jr ends Real Madrid uncertainty, signs new 6-year deal

Vinícius Jr. agrees new 6-year deal to stay at Real Madrid
MADRID — Vinícius Júnior has put an end to months of speculation over his Real Madrid future, agreeing to a new contract that will keep the Brazil forward at the Spanish giants until June 2032.

Madrid announced the agreement on Thursday, bringing to a close a prolonged negotiation that had raised questions over whether one of the club’s biggest stars could leave the Santiago Bernabéu.

“Real Madrid and Vinícius Jr have agreed to extend our player's contract, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2032,” the club said.

The breakthrough came a day after representatives of the 26-year-old held talks with Madrid executives. The meeting reportedly left Vinícius’ camp optimistic after the club tabled improved financial terms.

The negotiations had dragged on for more than a year, with the player’s previous contract due to expire in June 2027.

At one point, the impasse was serious enough for Madrid to consider allowing Vinícius to leave this summer if an extension could not be agreed. Premier League champions Arsenal were among the clubs reportedly monitoring the situation.

That possibility has now disappeared.

Madrid rewards key figure

Vinícius joined Real Madrid from Brazil in 2018 as an 18-year-old prospect. Eight seasons later, the club says he has made 375 appearances, scored 128 goals and collected 14 trophies.

His honours include two Champions League titles, three Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three LaLiga titles, one Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups.

“His contribution to all these titles has been crucial thanks to his play, assists, and goals... Vinicius has become one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history,” Madrid said.

The Brazilian has also scored in two Champions League finals, strengthening his reputation as a player who can deliver on football’s biggest nights.

From €17.5m to improved terms

The financial details of the new agreement were not officially disclosed, but the negotiations had revolved heavily around Vinícius’ value to Madrid.

Sources told ESPN that the club’s latest proposal represented a significant improvement on an earlier offer worth approximately €22 million ($25.3m) per year.

Vinícius had been earning about €17.5 million ($20.2m) annually under the final year of his previous contract and had sought a package closer to €30 million ($34.6m).

The latest offer was enough to break the deadlock.

Vinícius returned to training at Madrid’s Valdebebas base on Monday following his post-World Cup break, before Wednesday’s decisive meeting between his representatives and senior club officials.

His agent, Frederico Pena, and adviser Tata Soares met Madrid director general José Ángel Sánchez and chief scout Juni Calafat as both sides worked towards a resolution.

A star Madrid could not afford to lose

The new agreement secures the long-term future of one of the club’s most influential players.

Vinícius was runner-up for the 2024 Ballon d’Or and was named FIFA’s The Best Men’s Player that same year.

His rise from teenage signing to one of Madrid’s attacking leaders has been central to the club’s success, and his ability to produce in decisive matches has made him particularly valuable.

For months, however, his future had been one of the biggest unresolved questions surrounding the club.

Now there is no ambiguity.

Vinícius is staying in Madrid—and the new contract keeps him there until 2032.
