Davido calls Trump to intervene, over tensions ahead of Osun election

OSOGBO — Afrobeats star Davido has called on U.S. President Donald Trump and the international community to closely monitor the upcoming Osun State governorship election, warning that rising political tensions could threaten a peaceful vote.

The singer made the appeal on Tuesday, August 11, just days before Osun voters are scheduled to head to the polls on August 15.

In a statement shared on his social media platform, Davido addressed Trump directly and urged the American president to take note of the situation in the southwestern Nigerian state.

“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.”

Davido said concerns were mounting over the possibility of violence, intimidation and disruption of the electoral process, stressing that residents should be able to vote without fear.

“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process. Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear.”

Davido seeks international scrutiny

Beyond Washington, the singer urged the broader international community to keep a close watch on the election and encourage Nigerian authorities to protect voters and uphold the integrity of the ballot.

“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected.”

His intervention comes at a politically sensitive moment in Osun, where the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, is seeking another term.

Adeleke is also Davido’s uncle, giving the singer a personal connection to one of the major political figures at the centre of the election.

That family connection is likely to place additional scrutiny on Davido’s intervention, although his statement framed the appeal around the safety of voters and the credibility of the electoral process rather than explicitly campaigning for a candidate.

Davido ended his statement with a direct appeal for calm, transparency and a credible election.
