Champions League draw: PSG handed blockbuster draw as Arsenal, Madrid and United face European heavyweights

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain will begin their Champions League title defence with a daunting run of fixtures after Thursday’s league-phase draw in Monaco paired them with Barcelona, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

The French champions, who retained the trophy last season by beating Arsenal on penalties, will also face Roma, Galatasaray, Villarreal, Slovan Bratislava and debutants Como in an eight-match league phase.

It is a draw that leaves little room for an easy start. PSG will welcome Barcelona and Aston Villa, while travelling to Manchester City and Como, with the remaining fixtures completing a schedule packed with European pedigree.

For Luis Enrique, the meeting with Barcelona carries an added layer of intrigue. The PSG coach will come up against his former club, while the French side will look to extend an impressive recent record against the Catalans.

PSG have won their last three visits to Barcelona, including a 2-1 victory in last season's league phase. That run has helped erase some of the pain of the infamous 6-1 “Remontada” defeat at Camp Nou in 2017.

Arsenal face European giants

Last season's beaten finalists Arsenal were given arguably one of the most demanding schedules in the draw.

The Premier League side will meet record 15-time European champions Real Madrid, German powerhouse Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, giving Mikel Arteta's team an early examination against some of the continent's most decorated clubs.

Arsenal's clash with Real Madrid stands out particularly strongly, with the Spanish giants entering another European campaign under returning manager José Mourinho.

Mourinho will also encounter a familiar opponent when Real Madrid face Inter Milan — the club he guided to Champions League glory in 2010 before leaving for his first spell at the Bernabéu.

Madrid's other opponents include PSV Eindhoven, Roma, RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK and AEK Athens.

Mourinho's reunion with Inter

The Madrid-Inter meeting will be one of the most nostalgic fixtures of the opening phase.

Mourinho's 2010 Inter side completed an historic treble, culminating in a Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich in Madrid.

Now back at Real Madrid, the Portuguese coach will face the club where he enjoyed one of the defining achievements of his managerial career.

Real Madrid will also make two trips to London, visiting Arsenal and Shakhtar Donetsk, with the Ukrainian champions using Stamford Bridge as their home venue.

Manchester United return to Europe's elite

Manchester United's return to the Champions League after a two-year absence will begin with a heavyweight reunion against Bayern Munich.

The fixture recalls the dramatic 1999 final, when United scored twice in stoppage time to overturn Bayern's lead and claim the European crown at Camp Nou.

United will also face Atletico Madrid and Sporting CP among their eight opponents, giving the English club a demanding route back into Europe's premier competition.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have been drawn against both PSG and Barcelona — two fixtures likely to attract enormous attention before the competition even reaches its knockout phase.

Aston Villa, the Europa League holders, also face PSG and Barcelona, ensuring the English side will have little time to ease into their return to the Champions League.

Liverpool handed a more manageable route

Liverpool appear to have emerged with one of the more favourable schedules among Europe's leading clubs.

The Reds will travel to Inter Milan and Fenerbahçe while hosting Atletico Madrid, among their eight league-phase opponents.

The Atletico fixture will revive memories of last season's dramatic meeting at Anfield, where Liverpool prevailed 3-2.

Compared with the schedules handed to PSG, Arsenal and Real Madrid, Liverpool's path looks less intimidating on paper — although the league-phase format leaves little margin for complacency.

Four clubs prepare for Champions League debuts

The new-look competition will also welcome four debutants: Como, LASK, Viking and Sabah.

Como have arguably received the most glamorous introduction.

The Italian newcomers will host PSG and Manchester United at their picturesque lakeside stadium and will also travel to Spain to face Barcelona and Real Betis.

Sabah, founded only in 2017, face an even more extraordinary first campaign. The Azerbaijani champions will welcome Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and Slavia Prague while making lengthy trips to England to face Arsenal and Manchester United.

Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt will also bring one of the competition's most unusual away-day experiences. Atletico Madrid, Dortmund, Lille and LASK must all travel north to the Arctic Circle to play at Bodø/Glimt's artificial pitch, with one of those fixtures scheduled for January.

How the new league phase works

The 2026/27 competition retains UEFA's 36-team league-phase structure.

Each club plays eight different opponents, with four matches at home and four away. Teams draw two opponents from each of the four seeding pots, while clubs cannot be paired with another side from their own country. The seeding is based on UEFA's five-year club coefficient rankings.

The opening matches will be played from September 8-10, with the league phase continuing through January. The final round of league-phase fixtures is scheduled for January 27, 2027.

The qualification picture is straightforward:

• 1st–8th: direct qualification for the round of 16
• 9th–24th: knockout play-offs for the remaining round-of-16 places
• 25th–36th: eliminated

The knockout play-offs will take place in February, followed by the round of 16 in March. The Champions League final is scheduled for June 5, 2027, in Madrid.

The exact dates and kick-off times for individual matches are due to be released by UEFA no later than Saturday, August 29.

With Europe's biggest clubs already drawn into heavyweight encounters, the league phase has produced a competition that promises to be unforgiving from the opening whistle.

For PSG, the message is particularly clear: defending the crown will demand navigating Barcelona, Manchester City and Aston Villa before the knockout rounds even begin.
