Miura's professional career began in 1986 with Brazilian giants Santos

Japan: Japanese football legend Kazuyoshi Miura has added another milestone to his extraordinary career, scoring his first competitive goal in nearly four years at the age of 59 to reaffirm why he remains one of the sport's most enduring figures.

The veteran forward, popularly known as "King Kazu," found the net on Saturday as Fukushima United thrashed Iwaki Furukawa 7-0 in the Emperor's Cup. On loan from Yokohama FC, Miura started the match, captained the side and scored his team's fifth goal, drawing loud celebrations from teammates and supporters alike.

The strike marked Miura's first competitive goal since November 2022, when he scored for Suzuka PG against Osaka, ending a lengthy wait with another memorable chapter in a career now spanning more than four decades.

Reflecting on the moment, the Japanese icon said he was determined to justify the faith shown in him by the coaching staff. "I wanted to live up to the expectations of everyone, including the manager, who had given me the opportunity to play until that point," Miura said after the match.

Despite Fukushima United already holding a comfortable lead when he scored, Miura said the reaction from everyone connected to the club made the moment even more special. 

"Above all, when I scored, even though we were already well ahead, it made me incredibly happy to see the players, staff and supporters all celebrating that single goal together with such joy... It was a great honour and a source of pride to take to the pitch wearing that weighty armband."

Earlier this month, Miura extended his loan spell with Fukushima United until June 2027, ensuring that his remarkable journey will continue into his 43rd professional season. The veteran striker is set to celebrate his 60th birthday on February 26 while still playing competitive football.

Announcing the extension, Miura reaffirmed his commitment to helping the club secure promotion.

"I have decided to continue my challenge at Fukushima United FC. I will continue to burn with passion and do my best in daily training to contribute to the team's promotion to J2. Let's share the joy together."

Miura's professional career began in 1986 with Brazilian giants Santos before taking him across several countries, including spells with Genoa in Italy, Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia, Sydney FC in Australia and Oliveirense in Portugal. Over the years, he has represented 17 clubs while becoming one of Japan's most celebrated footballers.

On the international stage, Miura scored 55 goals in 89 appearances for Japan before bringing his national team career to an end in 2000. More than two decades later, he continues to defy age and expectations, remaining the world's oldest active professional footballer while inspiring generations with his longevity and unwavering passion for the game.
