UK Immigration Update: New rules affect Graduate Visa holders and families

UK immigration on July 9, 2026 published a new introduced new that affect Graduate Visa holders and families.

The Home Office has published a new Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules, introducing amendments to the Graduate Route, Appendix FM, and Part 8. Most changes take effect from 3 August 2026.

One of the most welcome changes concerns children born in the UK to a parent on a Graduate Visa. We'll break down what's changing below. 👇

The key change

Previously, there was no clear route for a child born in the UK during a parent's Graduate Visa to apply for permission as that parent's dependant. This left families having to seek alternative, often more complicated — immigration solutions.

Under the new rules, eligible UK-born children of Graduate Visa holders will now be able to apply for leave as a dependant under the Graduate Route. This closes an important gap and gives international graduates raising families in the UK much greater certainty.

Other technical changes

The same Statement of Changes also amends Appendix FM and Part 8 (Family Members). These changes are largely technical, ensuring consistency across the Immigration Rules, particularly for family applications involving Graduate Visa holders.

They don't create a new family migration route, but they do simplify how the rules operate and remove inconsistencies.

Who this affects

These changes are particularly relevant if you are:

✅ An international graduate currently holding a Graduate Visa

✅ A family expecting, or who has recently had, a child in the UK

✅ Planning a future immigration application involving a dependant child

If you fall into any of these groups, it's worth getting advice early, before your circumstances change or before you submit an application.

What to do next

If you hold a Graduate Visa and have recently had a child in the UK, or expect your family circumstances to change, get legal advice before making an application. Every case is different, and the right application at the right time avoids unnecessary delays.
