Fugitive father sentenced to 30 years for ‘honour killing’ of daughter in Netherlands

A 53-year-old man, Khaled al-Najjar, has been sentenced in absentia to 30 years in prison for the “honour killing” of his daughter, Rawan, in a case that shocked the Netherlands.

The father, who remains a fugitive, allegedly bound and drowned the 18-year-old. Both of Rawan’s brothers were also sentenced to 20 years in prison for their participation in the crime.

The case gained widespread attention after Rawan adopted a more Western lifestyle, which her family considered “shameful.” Authorities stated that her refusal to wear a headscarf and her active presence on social media, particularly TikTok, were the impetus for the crime.

Sons convicted of participation

Rawan’s two brothers, Mohammed and Muhannad, were found guilty of participating in the murder and sentenced to 20 years in jail.

Despite Muhannad’s declarations that he would try to “clear his name,” the court concluded that the sons actively transported Rawan to the murder location, knowing what would follow.

The family believed Rawan’s lifestyle was damaging their honour and reputation. A live video on TikTok, where she appeared without a headscarf and with make-up, was allegedly the decisive event that provoked the family’s reaction. Rawan had already suffered control and intimidation from her family members, which ultimately led to her tragic death.

Brutality of the crime

The case shocked the public due to the brutality of the act; Rawan was found bound and gagged after her disappearance. Authorities located the father’s DNA evidence beneath her fingernails, suggesting Rawan attempted to defend herself.

The prosecutor stressed the composure the 18-year-old must have shown when facing the threat of death and her isolation during the commission of the crime.
