Scandal as Cyprus hospital secretly removes heart of British national who fell ill and died while on holiday in the island
A British woman has discovered her husband’s heart was allegedly removed by medical staff in Cyprus, preventing a coroner from determining his cause of death, according to The Sun.
Michael Graley, 76, died after suffering a cramp in his leg whilst on holiday in Cyprus. The retired cemetery superintendent, who was on the island with his wife Yvonne, 73, and their family, died just ten minutes after arriving at a hospital in Paralimni, The Sun reports.
Yvonne, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, said a doctor came out of the room and told her he was dead.
A pathologist in Cyprus conducted a post-mortem, but when his body
was flown to the UK, officials noticed no cause of death was given on
the certificate, according to The Sun.
This meant a second post-mortem was required by the coroner’s office in Rochdale. Officials told Yvonne that someone had removed Michael’s heart and they could not determine a cause of death.
“I was so shocked. It was horrible,” she told The Sun.
Cypriot police said Michael’s heart was sent to a research facility.
His daughter, Hayley, 47, said the family were angry and needed answers.
Rochdale Coroners Office said its investigation was ongoing.
