Today in History: First observance of World AIDS Day

1640 – Portugal restores independence from Spain
A nationalist uprising in Lisbon deposed the Spanish vicereine and proclaimed John IV of Portugal king, ending the Iberian Union and launching the Portuguese Restoration War.

1913 – First moving automobile assembly line introduced by Henry Ford
On this day Ford installed the first moving assembly line — revolutionising mass-production and cutting car build time dramatically.

1918 – Establishment of the Kingdom of Iceland

Her arrest for defying segregation laws sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and became a defining moment in the US civil-rights movement.

1958 – The French territory Ubangi‑Shari attains autonomy (future Central African Republic)
On this date, the colony gained autonomous status within the French Union — a step toward eventual full independence.

1958 – Fire at Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago kills dozens
A tragic school fire on 1 December 1958 resulted in the death of many children and contributed to changes in US fire safety regulations for schools.

1959 – Signing opens for the Antarctic Treaty
The treaty — which designates Antarctica as a scientific preserve and bans military activity — was opened for signature on 1 December 1959.
