Hero citizen who disarmed gunman in Bondi, Sydney, attack rushed to surgery
The citizen who disarmed one of the two gunmen during the attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney has been transferred to the hospital for surgery.
Speaking to the television network “7NEWS,” a man named Mustafa revealed that the intervening citizen is his 43-year-old Muslim cousin, Ahmed al Ahmed, a father of two. Mustafa stated that the 43-year-old, a mini-market owner, had no experience with weapons and was coincidentally at the scene when he decided to risk his life to confront the gunman.
A video circulated on social media captured the moment the man approached the gunman from behind as he was firing indiscriminately at citizens attempting to escape. The footage shows the man immobilising the suspect, wresting the weapon away from him, and turning it towards the gunman, forcing him to crawl backward before he fled towards the second gunman, who continued to fire.
After disarming the perpetrator, the man raised his hands, making it clear to any nearby police officers that he posed no threat. He then placed the weapon on the ground and moved away from the scene.
According to Mustafa, his cousin was shot twice, likely by the second perpetrator, and was transported to the hospital, where he remains for treatment. “He is in the hospital, and we do not know exactly what is going on yet. He is 100% a hero,” Mustafa stated to 7NEWS.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and no further details regarding the injured man’s health status have been released so far.
