US and Ukraine launching Switzerland talks on Trump peace plan next week
Kyiv officials have confirmed that Ukraine and the US will be engaging in direct talks based on the American 28-point plan, which reportedly satisfies most of the Russian demands, including ceding of territory captured and occupied by Russia, reducing Ukrainian armed forces and ruling out the possibility of the country ever becoming a NATO member.
A Ukrainian negotiator wrote on social media that negotiations in Switzerland will focus on ways of ending the war.
‘Over the next few days we will be launching consultations between high ranking Ukrainian and American officials in regard to the possible parameters of a future peace deal’, said negotiator, former defence minister, Rustem Umeroff.
He noted that this was yet another stage in continued dialogue with Washington and mostly aims to align the approach between the two countries over next steps.
A previous round of direct talks with Russia, held in Turkey last week, yielded no progress.
According to a relevant Zelenskyy directive, his top advisor Andreey Yermak will be heading off the Ukrainian team.
The Ukrainians spoke of Russian participation, but Kremlin did not immediately verify this report.
