Today in History: The Quebec sovereignty referendum to leave Canada took place
The following are some of the major events that occurred on 30 October:
AD 130 — The city of Antinoöpolis was founded by Emperor Hadrian in honour of his companion Antinous.
637 — The city of Antioch surrendered to forces of the Rashidun Caliphate during the Arab–Byzantine wars.
1340 — The Battle of Río Salado (also called the Battle of Tarifa) took place, where Castilian-Portuguese forces defeated the Marinid and Granadan armies.
1485 — Henry VII of England was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 30 October, officially inaugurating the Tudor dynasty.
1905 — The October Manifesto was issued by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, granting civil liberties and establishing the Duma.
1908 — Henri Farman made the first cross-country airplane flight in Europe, flying from Bouy to Reims.
1938 — The radio drama The War of the Worlds by Orson Welles was broadcast on the CBS network, causing panic among some listeners.
1961 — The Soviet Union detonated the hydrogen bomb known as Tsar Bomba over the archipelago of Novaya Zemlya.
1995 — The Quebec sovereignty referendum took place in the Canadian province of Québec, with voters rejecting independence from Canada.
2014 — The government of Sweden officially recognised the state of Palestine.
