Today in History: Hamas attacks Israel, sparking war

The following are some of the major events that occurred on October 7 throughout history:

1571 – Battle of Lepanto: Allied Christian forces of the Holy League defeated the Ottoman Empire in a major naval battle off south-western Greece, halting Ottoman expansion in the Mediterranean.

1765 – Stamp Act Congress convenes: Representatives from nine American colonies met in New York City to co-ordinate opposition to the British Stamp Act, laying the groundwork for unified colonial resistance.

1879 – Dual Alliance formed: Germany and Austria-Hungary signed a secret treaty pledging military support if either was attacked by Russia, a pact that later expanded into the Triple Alliance and shaped European alliances before the First World War.

1913 – Ford’s moving assembly line debuts: The Ford Motor Company introduced the moving assembly line for the Model T, revolutionising industrial production and paving the way for mass manufacturing.

1944 – Plans for the United Nations finalised: The Dumbarton Oaks Conference in Washington, D.C., concluded with agreements that became the foundation of the United Nations, established the following year to promote global peace and co-operation.

1949 – East Germany established: The German Democratic Republic was proclaimed in the Soviet zone of occupied Germany, creating a communist state that existed until reunification with West Germany in 1990.

1959 – First photographs of the Moon’s far side: The Soviet space probe Luna 3 transmitted the first images of the Moon’s far side, providing an unprecedented view of the hemisphere never visible from Earth.

1996 – Fox News Channel launches: The Fox News Channel made its broadcast debut as a 24-hour cable news network, soon becoming a major force in US media and political discourse.

2001 – US-led war in Afghanistan begins: In response to the 11 September attacks, the United States and Britain launched air strikes against Taliban and al-Qaeda targets, marking the start of the war in Afghanistan.

2023 – Hamas attacks Israel, sparking war: Hamas launched a large-scale surprise attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing about 1,200 people and triggering a new war in the region.
