Today in History: China ends one-child policy
Here are some of the major events that occurred in history on 29 October:
1923 — Republic of Turkey proclaimed. The Grand National Assembly in Ankara declared Turkey a republic and elected Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk) its first president.
1929 — Wall Street’s “Black Tuesday.” The U.S. stock market plunged sharply, capping the crash that helped trigger the Great Depression.
1941 — Kaunas (Kovno) “Great Action.” Nazi units and collaborators murdered more than 9,000 Jews in a single day at the Ninth Fort in German-occupied Lithuania.
1956 — Suez Crisis begins. Israel invaded Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula; Britain and France intervened days later, provoking a major international crisis.
1969 — First ARPANET message. A UCLA programmer sent the first host-to-host “LO” message to SRI at 10:30 p.m., a milestone in the birth of the Internet.
2004 — EU constitutional treaty signed. Leaders of the then-25 EU member states signed the (ultimately unratified) Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe in Rome.
2012 — Hurricane Sandy landfall. “Superstorm” Sandy came ashore near Atlantic City, New Jersey, bringing deadly surge and widespread damage across the U.S. Northeast.
2015 — China ends one-child policy. The Communist Party announced all couples could have two children, reversing the decades-long one-child rule.
2018 — Lion Air Flight 610 crash. A Boeing 737 MAX 8 crashed into the Java Sea shortly after take-off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.
2022 — Seoul Halloween crowd crush. A crowd surge in Itaewon, Seoul, killed more than 150 people during Halloween festivities.
