Manchester United plan £60 million summer bid for Adam Wharton ahead of Kobbie Mainoo exit - Paper Round

Manchester United are planning on signing Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton to replace Kobbie Mainoo, while Steven Gerrard has turned down the chance to return to Rangers as a replacement for Russell Martin.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur are looking to reunite Brentford forward Kevin Schade with Thomas Frank, and Inter Miami are keen to sign Neymar when he leaves Santos.

United plan Wharton bid

Manchester United are looking to sign Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace next summer, according to the Daily Star. The club expect both Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro to leave, opening up a place for the 21-year-old.

The paper reports: "Manchester United are plotting a shock £60m raid on Crystal Palace for England star Adam Wharton.

"United boss Ruben Amorim has kept close tabs on Wharton's progress, and has become a huge fan of the midfielder. The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in English football in the last 18 months.

"Amorim will look to strengthen his midfield next summer, with both Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro expected to leave Old Trafford.

"And United believe a bid in the region of £60m would be good enough to lure Wharton to Old Trafford next summer."

Gerrard turns down Rangers

After talks this weekend with Rangers, Steven Gerrard has turned down the chance to return to Ibrox as manager.

The former Liverpool midfielder had appeared close to agreeing a second spell in Scotland, but Rangers must now look elsewhere.

The Daily Record states: "Steven Gerrard has sensationally pulled out of the running to be the next Rangers manager.

"Ibrox chiefs held talks with the 45-year-old former Gers boss in London this weekend and were keen on bringing him back to Glasgow for a second spell in charge.

"But Gerrard - who was the fans’ favourite to take over - chose to withdraw from the process on Saturday night.

"The man who delivered 55 [league title] hasn't ruled out returning to the club in the future.
"However, the title-winning gaffer has decided that the timing isn't right to make a stunning return to Govan."

Tottenham keen on Brentford forward

Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for Brentford forward Kevin Schade, the Mirror believes. The 23-year-old Germany international is a target for his former manager, Thomas Frank, who is now in place as Spurs boss.

The Mirror claims: "Tottenham are keeping an eye on Brentford star Kevin Schade ahead of next summer's transfer window. The attacker, who worked with Thomas Frank when he was in charge of The Bees, has impressed in west London.

"Schade remains under contract until 2028 after signing for Brentford in a then-club record deal for £22 million, turning a loan spell into a permanent move. The Germany international has been thrust into the forefront of Keith Andrews' plans after the exits of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa over the summer.

"The Lilywhites were active in attempting to sign forward-thinking players over the summer. Following Frank's arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, they looked to land Mbeumo.

"Frank did see Mohammed Kudus added to his ranks, while Mathys Tel's move was made permanent and Randal Kolo Muani was signed later in the window. But it seems another attacker is already on the agenda for next summer.

"And Schade appears to be on the shortlist. Given Frank's verdict on the talent just a matter of months ago, perhaps that should be no surprise."

Beckham wants Neymar

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham is keen to bring Neymar to his MLS club, reports The Sun.

The Brazilian forward will soon be out of contract at Santos, and he could be reunited with his former Barcelona colleagues Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

The paper writes: "David Beckham's MLS franchise already boasts two-thirds of Barcelona's famous MSN attack in Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

"The Brazilian attacker returned to his boyhood club Santos in January after his Al-Hilal contract was terminated. "He initially signed a six-month deal back in Brazil but extended his terms until December. "Once his current agreement expires, he will be free to talk with other clubs.

"However, it is argued that his representatives can see value in Neymar playing in the MLS ahead of the USA World Cup next summer.

"Inter Miami are believed to be working on new contracts for both Messi and Suarez.
