Man fires four shots in the air after ex-girlfriend refuses ride in Cyprus
Limassol District Court has ordered an eight-day detention period for a 34-year-old man arrested in connection with a shooting incident in the Ayios Ioannis area of Limassol.
Police arrested the suspect yesterday after he allegedly fired four shots into the air following an argument with a woman he had recently broken up with.
Suspect followed woman after argument
Police launched an investigation after receiving a complaint late on the night of 13 October from a property owner who reported finding spent casings on the street. Officers who went to the scene found four empty casings.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage revealed the 34-year-old suspect on a motorcycle following a woman who was walking on the street. The two people stopped and talked, after which the man drew a pistol and fired four shots into the air before leaving the area.
According to the footage, around 03:37 in the morning, three people—two women and one man—were walking when the motorcycle, driven by a young man, followed them. The perpetrator reportedly approached one of the women and insisted she get on the motorcycle with him. When the woman refused, the perpetrator drew the pistol and fired four times into the air before fleeing the scene.
Victim claims recent breakup
During questioning, the woman testified that she had been in a relationship with the suspect for the past six months but had recently ended it after learning he had a child with another woman.
The woman stated that on the night of the incident, the 34-year-old approached her at a club where she occasionally worked, attempting to speak with her again. Later, as she was leaving on foot with friends, the suspect followed her on his motorcycle and tried to convince her to go with him. The argument ended when the man produced the pistol and fired into the air.
Suspect denies questions, firearm remains missing
The 34-year-old was arrested yesterday but, according to police, refused to answer questions from the Limassol Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigators.
Both the motorcycle and the firearm remain missing. Authorities are currently investigating how the suspect obtained the firearm.
The police continue to conduct examinations and take depositions. The suspect’s lawyer did not object to the request for an eight-day remand for his client.
