Macron’s reappointment of Lecornu as Prime Minister sparks fierce political backlash in France

The decision by President Emmanuel Macron to reappoint

Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister, less than a month after his first appointment and just a few days after his resignation on Monday, has sparked intense political reactions in France.

The opposition is fiercely condemning the President’s decision, with the far-right ‘National Rally’ of Marine Le Pen and ‘La France Insoumise’ (France Unbowed) of Jean-Luc Mélenchon announcing a motion of no confidence against the Lecornu government, which they describe as “politically bankrupt” and “democratically humiliating.”

The leader of the National Rally, Jordan Bardella, stated that his party would immediately submit a motion of no confidence, accusing Macron of acting “isolated and detached from reality.” As he wrote in his post on X, “the second Lecornu government is a bad-taste joke, a democratic shame and a humiliation for the French people.”

Similarly, Mathilde Panot, from La France Insoumise, argued that the President is “simply postponing the inevitable: his departure.” Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leader of the left-wing alliance, spoke of “a new insult to the French people from an irresponsible man, intoxicated by his power,” stressing that “France and its people have been humiliated.”

The Socialists categorically denied any agreement with Lecornu, noting that they would wait to see the first initiatives of the government, while the Ecologists described Macron’s decision as “unbelievable.”

The former president of the Republicans, Éric Ciotti, called on all parties to vote against the government, warning that Lecornu’s reappointment would deepen the political crisis in the country.
