Burkina Faso demands explanation from CAF for Nigeria’s playoff spot
Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré has demanded answers from the country’s Football Federation and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after his nation missed out on a World Cup playoff spot to Nigeria.
The controversy arose following Burkina Faso’s 3–1 victory over Ethiopia, a result they believed had secured their qualification.
However, CAF applied a rule discounting points earned against the lowest-ranked team in each group — a decision triggered by Eritrea’s withdrawal — which ultimately benefited Nigeria, who had only drawn twice with Zimbabwe, the bottom team in their group. The ruling reportedly left Traoré frustrated and seeking clarification.
Reports indicate that Traoré has requested a full breakdown of the qualification calculations, particularly given Burkina Faso’s strong finish.
The Stallions had played earlier qualifiers away from home while their Stade du 4 Août was being renovated to meet CAF standards. After returning to their home stadium, they won crucial matches, only to later learn that Nigeria had advanced instead.
