Two students faces deportation for living illegally in northern Cyprus

Two Sudanese nationals accused of residing illegally in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have been ordered to remain in custody for an additional two days as investigations continue.

The suspects, identified as MMSM and OMOA, appeared before the court in Lefkoşa on ednesday September 24 on charges of “unlawful residence.”

The police testified that on 23 September 2025, at 2:23 p.m., MMSM voluntarily appeared at the Immigration Department of the Lefkoşa Police Directorate. A subsequent immigration check revealed that he had overstayed his legal permit since 16 April 2023, amounting to 891 days. 

His compatriot, OMOA, was also found to have overstayed since 29 November 2024, totaling 298 days.

Both men were arrested on the spot, and a criminal investigation was launched. Police stated that inquiries are ongoing to determine whether the suspects committed any offenses during their unlawful stay. Officials also confirmed that steps are being taken to arrange their deportation.

They were ordered to remain in police custody for two more days.
