476 – Fall of the Western Roman Empire
Romulus
Augustulus, the last Western Roman emperor, was deposed by the Germanic
chieftain Odoacer, effectively bringing an end to the Western Roman
Empire.
1609 – Henry Hudson “discovers” Manhattan
Navigator Hudson found the island of Manhattan, later central to New York City’s establishment.
1781 – Founding of Los Angeles
Spanish settlers laid claim to the area that became Los Angeles, now the U.S.’s second-most populous city.
1886 – Geronimo surrenders
Apache leader Geronimo surrendered to U.S. forces, marking an end to major Native American armed resistance in the Southwest.
1888 – Kodak patent issued
George Eastman received a patent for the roll-film box camera and trademarked “Kodak,” revolutionizing photography.
1944 – Liberation of Antwerp and Finland exits WWII
During World War II, British forces liberated Antwerp, and Finland formally exited the war against the Soviet Union.
1957 – Little Rock integration crisis
Governor
Faubus of Arkansas deployed National Guardsmen to prevent Black
students—the “Little Rock Nine”—from entering Central High School,
intensifying the U.S. civil rights struggle.
1949 – Peekskill Riots
A concert by activist Paul Robeson ended in violence when an anti-communist mob attacked attendees, injuring over 140 people.
1998 – Founding of Google
Larry Page and Sergey Brin established Google, which would go on to transform internet search and digital life.
2016 – Canonization of Mother Teresa
Pope Francis formally canonized Mother Teresa, recognizing her humanitarian legacy.
