Scammers in north Cyprus send fake traffic fine messages using highways department’s name

Citizens are being targeted with fraudulent text messages falsely issued under the name of the Highways Department, warning them of unpaid traffic-related fees.

Northern Cyprus minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arıklı, took to social media to alert the public, stressing that the messages are entirely fake. “I have instructed the Information Technologies and Communications Authority (BTHK) to immediately pursue these fraudsters in coordination with the police. Citizens must not click on these links under any circumstances,” Arıklı cautioned.

Following the minister’s warning, a citizen shared with Kıbrıs Postası one of the scam messages they had received. The text, designed to appear as an official announcement, read:  “KGM – General Directorate of Highways (Official Notice).

As of September 17, 2025, our system has detected an unpaid toll fee related to your vehicle. Failure to make payment will result in administrative follow-up and legal action. To avoid delays and additional penalties, please complete your payment immediately.
For official online payment, please use only the General Directorate of Highways’ official website.”

Authorities warn that such fraudulent messages are crafted to deceive recipients into clicking malicious links, potentially leading to financial theft or identity fraud.

Citizens are urged to exercise caution, verify any suspicious notifications through official government channels, and report such attempts to law enforcement.
