Man wanted for assaulting his girfriend in 2019 arrested at Ercan Airport upon return to north Cyprus

Lefkoşa – A man who had been wanted for allegedly assaulting his then-girlfriend in 2019, was arrested at Ercan Airport upon re-entering the country after several years abroad. 

The suspect identified as H.D., was brought before a court in Lefkosa on Monday Sept. 22 on charges of assault.

Police told the court that the incident occurred on September 13, 2019, inside a dormitory room in Lefkoşa when the suspect allegedly became enraged when his girlfriend attempted to end their relationship and severely assaulted her by punching her arms and legs.

The victim filed a complaint on September 17, 2019. A medical report obtained on the same day confirmed the presence of physical injuries consistent with assault.

Following the report, police launched an investigation and determined that the suspect had left the country on September 14, 2019. He remained wanted until September 21, 2025, when authorities identified his arrival at Ercan Airport and arrested him immediately.

Police confirmed that the investigation has since been completed and noted that H.D. had entered the country as a tourist. They requested bail conditions to ensure the suspect remains available for trial.

After reviewing the evidence, the judge ordered that H.D. be prohibited from leaving the country, pay a ₺50,000 cash bail, and report to police once a week.
