EMU is the the gate way to the world for northern Cyprus: EMU Rector
Eastern Mediterranean University (DAÜ) Rector, Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç, underlined the critical importance of higher education for employment, the economy, and international visibility, describing DAÜ as a state university with strong brand value and nearly 78,000 alumni worldwide.
Speaking on Kıbrıs Genç TV’s morning program “Genç’te Sabah”, hosted by Meltem Sonay, Prof. Dr. Kılıç discussed the new academic year, the current state of higher education, and DAÜ’s future strategies.
“DAÜ is a Gateway to the World”
Prof. Dr. Kılıç noted that tourism and education are the two key sectors shaping the country’s economy. He emphasized that higher education contributes not only to economic development but also to scientific progress, international outreach, and employment. “With nearly 78,000 graduates, DAÜ serves as a gateway from Northern Cyprus to the world,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of promotion in the higher education sector, stressing the need for comprehensive planning and oversight. Student numbers, infrastructure, and accommodation capacities must be considered, he argued, with universities evaluated not only on quantity but also on quality.
Student-Friendly Environment and State-Supported Scholarships
Prof. Dr. Kılıç stated that creating a truly “student-friendly island” requires government-led strategic planning in addition to the efforts of universities. Students, he said, should not be regarded merely as sources of income, and both central and local authorities have responsibilities in supporting their adaptation.
On scholarship policies, he revealed that 73% of non-scholarship student preferences are for DAÜ, demonstrating the significance of financial support in student choices. Pointing to European models, Prof. Dr. Kılıç emphasized that scholarship systems should be administered at the state level and called for a similar approach in Northern Cyprus.
Strong Brand Value and Strategic Vision
As a state university, DAÜ’s 46-year legacy and compliance with legal frameworks give it strong brand value and credibility, Prof. Dr. Kılıç noted. He said DAÜ’s reputation is a reference point for the sector, supported by its commitment to quality and innovation.
Looking ahead, the rector stated that DAÜ has a strategic plan extending to 2030. The university is adapting to digital transformation, introducing new programs in information technology and artificial intelligence. Prof. Dr. Kılıç highlighted that DAÜ established Cyprus’s first artificial intelligence laboratory, reflecting its ongoing commitment to modernization and academic excellence.
