Betting shop employee arrested for cancelling bet slip and keeping the money in north Cyprus

A man accused of embezzling funds from a betting shop where he was employed has been ordered to remain in police custody for three days while investigations continue.

The suspect identified as, RO, appeared before the court on Saturday after being charged with theft at Lefkosia Betting, a betting outlet operating in Gönyeli.

Presenting the case in court, the police testified that between 29 and 31 August 2025, the suspect, while on duty at the betting shop, placed two separate bets worth a total of 20,000 TL. After losing the wagers, he allegedly canceled the bet slips and failed to return the money to the shop’s cash register, instead misappropriating the funds.

Police said the incident came to light on 5 September 2025, leading to his arrest under a detention order. The court heard that the suspect has given a voluntary statement, which is expected to be verified during the investigation. Authorities also plan to conduct a review of his past transactions at the betting outlet.

Requesting further detention, police emphasized that additional time was needed to confirm the suspect’s testimony and examine financial records.

After reviewing the evidence, the judge ordered that he remain in police custody for three days to assist the ongoing investigation.
