Ukrainian drone strike sparks fire at Sochi oil depot

A Ukrainian drone attack overnight triggered a fire at an oil depot in Sochi, the southwestern Russian resort city that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, Russian officials said Sunday.

Governor Veniamin Kondratyev of Russia's Krasnodar region confirmed the incident via Telegram, stating that debris from a downed drone struck an oil tank, igniting a blaze. “Sochi suffered a drone attack by the Kiev regime last night,” he wrote, noting that over 120 firefighters were deployed to contain the fire.

Footage circulated by Russian media — though unverified — appeared to show flames and thick black smoke billowing from the site. Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, briefly suspended flights at Sochi airport, but operations resumed shortly afterward.

Sochi, located approximately 400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, has not been a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks. However, late last month, a Ukrainian drone strike reportedly killed a woman in the city’s Adler district.

The Russian Defence Ministry reported that air defence units intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, including one over Krasnodar and 60 over the Black Sea. The ministry did not specify the total number of drones launched by Ukraine.

Meanwhile, in another development on Sunday, a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Voronezh region injured four people and sparked multiple fires, local officials said. In retaliation, Russian forces launched a missile attack on Kyiv, according to Ukrainian military authorities.

Ukraine has intensified its drone attacks on Russian energy and military infrastructure in recent months, targeting what it views as critical components of Moscow’s war efforts. However, Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the Sochi incident.

As the conflict grinds on with no signs of de-escalation, Kyiv has warned of further strikes in response to Russia’s recent uptick in attacks, which have resulted in numerous civilian casualties. Despite international calls for a ceasefire, including a reported ten-day ultimatum issued by U.S. President Donald Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin has dismissed any talk of a lasting truce as unrealistic and counterproductive.

The Krasnodar region, which includes the frequently targeted Ilsky oil refinery, remains a key hub in southern Russia's energy infrastructure — and a persistent focus of Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign.
