Two men remanded in separate sexual assault cases in north Cyprus

Two men have been remanded in custody by the Lefkoşa District Court in north Cyprus in separate cases involving allegations of sexual abuse.

Case 1: Father Accused of Abusing Minor Son

A 48-year-old man, identified as B.K., was brought before court on charges of “sexual abuse of a child under 16,” “sexual assault against his own child,” and “assault.”

According to the police, the case was uncovered on 17 August 2025, when the suspect’s 16-year-old son attempted suicide by ingesting medication. The boy was found unconscious by his mother and taken to Lefkoşa Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care.

Authorities said the boy later disclosed allegations of abuse to medical staff, after which he gave a statement in the presence of a social services officer. According to his account, B.K. allegedly subjected him to sexual assault and abuse between 2023 and 2025 at their home in Alayköy.

Police announced that the suspect will undergo a medical examination at the Barış Mental and Nervous Diseases Hospital to determine whether he has a psychosexual disorder and is criminally responsible.

Police said the child will be examined by a gynecologist and the reason for attempting to end her life will be investigated. 

Police arrested the suspect on 18 August, seizing two mobile phones, a USB device, and a computer as evidence. The accused has denied the charges, claiming his actions were limited to “father-son play.” "Because my son was overweight, I touched his belly and chest, squeezed him, and asked him how much he weighed. This was just a joke between father and son. I never intended to harass him. I did not engage in sexual behavior," he said in court.

The judge ordered that the suspect remain in custody for three days and undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Case 2: Uncle Accused of Assaulting Niece in Haspolat

In a separate case, a man identified as N.K. was ordered to remain in prison for up to 20 days following allegations that he sexually assaulted his 24-year-old niece.

Police in a court testimony noted that the incident occurred on 15 August 2025 at the home of the suspect’s brother in Haspolat. It is alleged that N.K. entered the bathroom while his niece was showering and committed sexual assault.

The suspect was not immediately located, and a court warrant was issued for his arrest. He was apprehended the next day and has since been charged with “sexual assault” and “sexual harassment.”

Police argued that since N.K. is in the country under tourist status, there is a risk he may flee if released.

The suspect was ordered to be held in prison for no more than 20 days while investigations continue.
