Student causes over one million TL in damages in Lefkosa traffic accident
A 26-year-old Nigerian student, has been charged with careless driving, dangerous driving, and speeding after causing a major traffic accident in Lefkosia north Cyprus that resulted in more than 1 million TL in damages.
The incident occurred on August 17, 2025, at around 8:13 p.m. on Necmettin Erbakan Avenue when the individual identified as EN who was driving a vehicle in the second lane when he attempted to overtake another car at high speed. Losing control, he veered off the road.
His vehicle first struck a black garbage bin and a sliding iron gate belonging to a residence, before colliding with a streetlight pole owned by Kıb-Tek. Unable to stop, the car continued forward and eventually crashed into the automatic shutters of a shop, where it came to a halt.
The individual was taken to Lefkosia State Hospital for observation immediately after the accident.
Police reported the following estimated damages: 100,000 TL to the MN 136 vehicle, 800,000 TL to the shop’s automatic shutters, 25,000 TL to the garbage bin and sliding iron gate of the residence, 30,000 TL to the Kıb-Tek streetlight pole. The total damage was estimated at over 1 million TL.
Following his release from hospital, EN was brought before the Lefkosia District Court. The court heard that he is residing in the country on a student visa.
The judge ordered his release pending trial under strict bail conditions, including: pay a cash bail of 30,000 TL, banned from leaving the country, report to the the police twice-weekly.
He will remain free under these conditions until his trial concludes.
