Man who allegedly hacked into north Cyprus power authority (Kıb-Tek) system remanded in custody
The Famagusta District Court has ordered a man to remain in police custody as investigations continue into allegations that he illegally accessed the computer and network systems of the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (Kıb-Tek) without authorization.
The suspect named only as KT, a Turkish Cypriot between 31 May and 2 June, allegedly infiltrated Kıb-Tek’s systems using his personal computer. While initial checks revealed no damage, the incident was officially reported to police on 15 August, leading to the suspect’s arrest at his residence in Famagusta.
Authorities seized a laptop, two mobile phones, two USB drives, and an internet modem as evidence. Gencer told the court that the suspect had verbally admitted to the offense but declined to provide a written statement.
The police noted that expert analysis of the seized devices is pending and revealed that similar intrusions into other government institutions’ systems are also under investigation.
The suspect was first brought before the court on 16 August, when a three-day detention order was granted. With inquiries still ongoing, police requested additional time, which the court approved.
As a result, he will remain in custody for six more days while the investigation continues.
