Man gets two-year prison sentence for cannabis cultivation in north Cyprus
Lefkoşa – The Lefkoşa Assize Court has sentenced Cemal Deniz to two years in prison for cultivating cannabis and possessing a significant quantity of the drug.
The verdict was delivered by a Lefkosa court on Thursday August 14.
Reading the court’s decision, the judge stated that the defendant was arrested during an operation conducted by the Lefkoşa Anti-Narcotics and Anti-Smuggling Directorate, during which he was found cultivating cannabis plants and in possession of 32 grams of cannabis.
The judge noted that the Supreme Court has repeatedly emphasized the need for deterrent and exemplary punishments in serious and prevalent crimes.
The judge underlined that cultivating cannabis plants, in addition to producing and possessing 32 grams of cannabis, significantly increased the gravity of the offence.
The court considered both mitigating and aggravating factors but concluded that the quantity of the drug was substantial and weighed against the defendant.
The judges unanimously imposed a two-year prison sentence.
