Man arrested after attempting to flee police ambush in Lefkosa drug bust
Lefkosa – A police ambush in Lefkosia has led to the seizure of large quantities of illegal drugs and the arrest of a suspect, who allegedly attempted to evade capture by locking himself inside a vehicle and later trying to escape while handcuffed.
According to testimony presented in court on Friday, the operation began on Thursday August 13, when police received information that a vehicle abandoned under eucalyptus trees in the Ortaköy area contained illegal drugs. Acting on this tip, officers launched “Operation Kod Bin” and set up surveillance at the location.
On August 14, the suspect identified as ÇA allegedly arrived at the scene, unlocked the vehicle, and entered it. As officers approached, CA reportedly locked the doors. Police were forced to break the windows, after which the suspect was detained using reasonable force.
Upon spotting drugs inside the vehicle, police arrested CA in the act. However, while handcuffed, he is said to have made another attempt to flee, falling to the ground before being quickly apprehended again.
A search of the vehicle and its trunk uncovered: 100 grams of powdered drugs, 580 grams of cannabis, 450 grams of cocaine, a precision scale, ₺3,215 in cash, €640 in cash and a glass jar.
The suspect reportedly denied the charges during questioning. Police indicated that the investigation is still in its early stages, with witness statements to be collected, CCTV footage to be examined, and the seized substances to be sent for analysis.
The court approved the police request for a three-day detention period while the investigation continues.
