Indian national kidnapped by his country men in south Cyprus

An 18-year-old man from India was allegedly kidnapped in Famagusta area , in south Cyprus earlier this month by compatriots, who locked him in an apartment room for a week, the Greek Cypriot police said on Thursday.

On Wednesday afternoon, the police arrested three people aged 33, 22, 21 and 20 for crimes committed on August 13, including abduction, assault, grievous bodily harm, threat and extortion.

On August 19, the teen reported to the police that he had been locked in a room on August 13 and had been beaten.

Police investigations led to four people who were arrested in their apartment in Famagusta.

Two other people, aged 23 and 19, were also in the apartment and found to be residing in Cyprus illegally.

The police also found cannabis and a bong, which the 33-year-old said were his. 

All four were taken before a court on Thursday and remanded for eight days. 

The victim’s complaint detailed being confined against his will whilst suffering physical assault from multiple perpetrators. Police confirmed the incidents occurred six days prior to the formal complaint being filed.

Investigators gathered testimonial evidence supporting the charges before executing the arrests at the suspects’ known address.

Three additional suspects found residing illegally

During the arrest operation, police discovered two 19-year-olds and one 23-year-old at the apartment who examination revealed were residing illegally in Cyprus.

Officers also located quantities of dried cannabis plant material and drug paraphernalia, which the 33-year-old arrestee allegedly admitted to owning.

All arrested individuals remain in custody whilst Famagusta CID continues investigations.

The case involves multiple criminal charges including kidnapping, assault, threats and extortion, with additional immigration violations under review by authorities.

Police investigations are ongoing.
