Four-person household’s hunger threshold in north Cyprus reaches ₺30,597

Lefkoşa, 11 August 2025 — The Cyprus Turkish Public Servants Union (KTAMS) has announced that, as of 31 July 2025, the monthly “hunger threshold” for a family of four in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus stands at ₺30,597.

The figure was calculated using the Nutrition Department guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health’s Directorate of Inpatient Treatment Institutions and price data from the Statistics Department.

According to the report, the monthly food expenses required for healthy nutrition are ₺7,888.20 for an adult woman, ₺8,222.70 for an adult man, ₺8,727.60 for a child aged 15–19, and ₺5,758.50 for a child aged 4–6.

KTAMS also reported that in July 2025, the country’s monthly inflation rate was 3.17%, with an annual cost-of-living increase of 35.33%.

The union criticised the continued use of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket based on 2015 consumption patterns, arguing that it no longer reflects current social consumption habits. KTAMS called for the CPI basket to be updated to align with present-day realities.
