Drunk individuals set vehicle on fire in Güzelyurt

Two individuals have been arrested for deliberately setting fire to a parked vehicle while under the influence of alcohol in the Güzelyurt district, north Cyprus.

The incident, which occurred around 10:30 PM on Friday August 1 on Şehit Halim Şahin Street, resulted in significant damage to the vehicle.

According to a statement from the Police Press Office, the suspects — identified only by their initials, M.M. (male, 37) and A.T. (male) — were found to be intoxicated at the time of the incident, with blood alcohol levels of 170 mg and 160 mg, respectively. Police say the pair poured gasoline on a parked KZ 759 license plate vehicle and intentionally set it ablaze.

The fire caused severe damage to the car’s engine compartment, electrical system, plastic components, and underside, while the bodywork, tires, interior upholstery, seats, and roof suffered partial damage. Firefighters responded promptly and managed to extinguish the flames before the fire could spread further.

A police investigation quickly identified the suspects, who were arrested on charges of intentional property damage while intoxicated.

In related incidents, police also reported the arrest of I.S. (male, 30) in Gönyeli and M.B. (male, 63) in Gazimağusa, both of whom were found to be heavily intoxicated and disturbing the public by shouting loudly.

Authorities remind the public that actions taken under the influence of alcohol that endanger public safety or disturb the peace will be met with strict legal consequences.
