Two arrested in “Karkas” drug operation in Ortaköy

Two men have been arrested in Ortaköy, Lefkoşa, after being caught in the act during a police sting operation codenamed “Karkas,” targeting illegal drug activity. 

The suspects, identified as AAMS, 25 and AOAI, 23 were detained at the scene while allegedly collecting a package of narcotics.

Providing testimony in court, the police explained that on July 4, 2025, the Narcotics and Anti-Smuggling Directorate received information that a package containing approximately 500 grams of cannabis had been dropped in the Ortaköy area. In response, officers set up a surveillance operation.

Shortly after, suspect AOAI arrived at the location in a vehicle. As AAMS exited the vehicle and attempted to pick up the package, both suspects were caught red-handed and immediately arrested.

The officer emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages, with the suspects’ statements needing verification. He noted that the individual who placed the drug package has yet to be identified, and that collected evidence will be sent for analysis while CCTV footage from the area will also be reviewed. 

The police requested that both suspects be remanded in custody for three days to facilitate the ongoing investigation.

The judge ordered both suspects to remain in police custody for three days.
