Trump backtracks on immediate end to Ukraine war

US President Donald Trump has left open the possibility that he may not be able to fulfill his election promise of an immediate end to the war in Ukraine.

“I don’t know. I can’t tell you if it will happen or not,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday when asked if he was sure he could end the hostilities. At the same time, he insisted that ending the war remains a priority, noting: “Yes. I would like to see it happen.”

We recall that during his election campaign, Trump had pledged to stop the war “from day one” of his term, but he recently retracted this statement in an interview with TIME magazine, calling it “an exaggeration.”

“We’ve helped a lot of countries. The Ukraine issue is a Biden issue. It’s not a Trump issue. I’m trying to end it.”
