TRNC citizen accuses president Tatar’s convoy of endangering his family's life in traffic incident

Lefkoşa, North Cyprus – Former trade unionist and Member of Parliament Ali Seylani has publicly accused the official convoy of President Ersin Tatar of endangering the safety of him and his family during a recent traffic incident near Haspolat.

In a statement shared on social media, Seylani claimed that at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Monday July 28 near the Hala Sultan Mosque roundabout on the Haspolat bypass, President Tatar’s vehicle and his security convoy entered the roundabout at high speed, creating what he described as a “serious risk” to his family's life and property.

Seylani strongly criticized the actions of the presidential convoy, questioning whether such behavior can be deemed acceptable in a country where traffic accidents regularly claim lives. "Is this normal in a country where we lose lives to traffic almost every day?" he wrote.

Addressing his statement directly to President Tatar, Seylani said:
"Mr. Tatar… I will not address you as 'President' because the head of a republic is responsible for the safety of its citizens. This evening, around 22:50, while I was driving on the left side of the road in accordance with traffic rules near the Haspolat roundabout—right in front of the Hala Sultan Mosque—your vehicle and your security guards entered the roundabout at high speed, endangering the safety of me and my family."

Seylani emphasized that his comments were not politically motivated, but rather a civic appeal regarding public safety, stating, “I wanted to share this not as a political statement, but as a concerned citizen.”

There has been no official response from the Presidency at the time of reporting.
