An 80-year-old man was murdered in his home in Limassol, Cyprus in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with his 47-year-old son verbally admitted to the crime and he has now been admitted to the Athalassa psychiatric hospital.
The police said they are now investigating a possible case of premeditated murder and named the victim as Georgios Hadjigeorgiou.
Police received a telephone call at around 4.15am from the 47-year-old, who reported that he had “injured” his father “with a knife”.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 80-year-old unconscious in a chair and bleeding, and also found a knife near him.
An ambulance was called to the scene, with paramedics finding that the man was exhibiting no vital signs.
The 47-year-old was arrested and taken into custody, before undergoing a psychological evaluation.
The police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing, with the scene having been cordoned off and a forensic pathologist having arrived to carry out an autopsy.
Earlier, news website Alpha had reported that the 80-year-old had been asleep in an armchair in his ground floor flat. It added that his son, who lives on the first floor, had gone downstairs and stabbed him to death.
The website also reported that the man was stabbed six times in total – four times in the chest and twice in the hand – with a “large kitchen knife”.
Meanwhile, news website Reporter wrote that the 80-year-old’s wife, the 47-year-old’s mother, was sleeping in an adjacent room when the murder took place.
Limassol deputy police director Lefteris Kyriakou said “there is no evidence that anything preceded it, while there are no reports of violence in this particular family.”
The scene was examined by forensic pathologist Nikolas Charalambous.
The 47-year-old was examined by a psychiatrist, who determined that he is not able to attend court proceedings, while a hospital order has already been issued for him and he is expected to be transferred to Athalassa hospital.
