Owner of GAU Serhat Akpınar highlights strength of TRNC higher education as a regional hub
Kyrenia, July 8, 2025 — Serhat Akpınar, Secretary General of the Democratic Party (DP) and Founding Rector of Girne American University (GAU), has reaffirmed the strength of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) higher education sector as a regional center of attraction.
He also emphasized the commitment to promoting equal opportunities in education and supporting the internationalization of universities.
In a statement following the official announcement of student admission quotas for the 2025–2026 academic year by the Council of Higher Education of Turkey (YÖK), Akpınar extended his best wishes to prospective students, their families, educators, and higher education institutions, calling it an important milestone in the academic calendar.
Akpınar highlighted that TRNC universities continue to stand out with their internationally-oriented academic structures, modern educational facilities, and student-centered approaches. He expressed hope that TRNC institutions would once again see successful enrollment periods within the newly announced quotas and that the country’s visibility and attractiveness in the field of higher education would further increase.
Addressing prospective students entering the university selection period, Akpınar encouraged them to make informed and conscious choices that would shape their futures. He also conveyed his wish that TRNC universities benefit from the selection period in the most effective and productive way possible.
Reiterating that TRNC higher education retains the strength and vision to maintain its status as a regional academic hub, Akpınar affirmed that the Democratic Party remains committed to supporting the development and quality of this sector. He also pledged continued efforts toward promoting educational equity and contributing to the international advancement of the country's universities.
