Man arrested at border for using stolen bank card in fraud scheme

A suspect BK has been ordered to remain in police custody for three days after being arrested at the Metehan Border Gate on charges of theft by finding and obtaining goods by deception.

According to testimony delivered in court by the police, the incident dates back to June 16, 2025, when BK allegedly found a lost bank card on Gazeteci Hasan Tahsin Street in Ortaköy and unlawfully took possession of it.

Using the card, BK is accused of making purchases totaling 3,200 TL at two supermarkets and one petrol station in Lefkoşa, fraudulently obtaining goods by charging them to the cardholder.

The card’s rightful owner reported it missing the same day, prompting an investigation. Surveillance footage from the scene reportedly confirmed BK’s involvement in the unauthorized transactions.

Police stated that the suspect was apprehended on July 12 while attempting to re-enter the country through the Metehan Border Gate. He has since given a voluntary statement, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are continuing to collect statements and analyze additional security footage related to the case.

After reviewing the case, the judge ruled that the suspect be held in custody for three days to allow the investigation to proceed.
