The app uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks to enable secure, peer-to-peer communication between nearby devices. One of its standout features is its ability to work entirely offline, making it ideal for users in areas with poor or no internet connectivity.

Messages on Bitchat are end-to-end encrypted, stored only on users’ devices, and are automatically deleted after a short time to protect user privacy.

Bitchat allows connected devices to form local Bluetooth clusters, relaying messages from one device to another as users move around. This mesh-style communication helps extend the message range far beyond standard Bluetooth limits.

The app also supports deferred message delivery, meaning that users who are offline will receive messages once they reconnect.

With Bitchat, Dorsey is pushing forward a decentralized, privacy-focused alternative to traditional internet-based messaging platforms.
