Illegal u-turn by truck driver triggers chain-reaction crash in Lefkoşa — One injured

Lefkoşa, 22 July 2025 — A truck driver’s illegal U-turn in defiance of traffic signage caused a three-vehicle collision on Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard in Lefkoşa, leaving one person injured and prompting an ongoing police investigation.

According to a statement from the Police Press Office, the incident occurred at around 11:30 AM near the Honda Traffic Lights Junction. The driver of a truck, identified as Abdulkadir Güngür (27), was proceeding westward through a green light when he attempted a prohibited U-turn, disregarding the “No U-Turn” sign.

As Güngür attempted the maneuver, an oncoming sedan, driven by Yasin Aslan (23) and heading eastbound, was forced to come to a sudden stop to avoid a collision.

Trailing behind Aslan’s vehicle was a vehicle transporter truck, driven by Bülent Kalkan (30). Kalkan failed to stop in time, crashing into the rear of Aslan's car and pushing it forward approximately eight meters, causing it to collide with the left front side of the truck.

The force of the impact also caused the transporter truck to veer and strike the left side of the truck before coming to a halt.

Yasin Aslan, the driver of the sedan, was injured in the crash and transported to Lefkoşa Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, where he remains under medical care. His condition has not yet been officially disclosed.

Authorities confirmed no other injuries at the scene. Traffic was temporarily disrupted in the area as police conducted their investigation and cleared the wreckage.

Police have launched a formal investigation into the incident and reiterated the importance of adherence to traffic regulations, particularly at major intersections, to prevent similar accidents in the future.
