Five Greek Cypriots arrested in north Cyprus for illegally entering the TRNC through military zone

GAZIMAĞUSA, NORTHERN CYPRUS – July 20, 2025 — Five Greek Cypriot individuals were ordered to remain in police custody for three days following their arrest for illegally entering the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) through a military-restricted area without undergoing immigration procedures.

The group was also found in possession of documents allegedly related to properties and construction firms in north Cyprus, raising suspicions of espionage.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on July 19 at the Akyar land border crossing in Gazimağusa. G.G. (male, 66) reportedly drove a vehicle into TRNC territory via a first-degree military-restricted zone without completing the required immigration checks. Four passengers—identified as A.K. (male), A.K. (female), N.G. (female), and A.L. (male), all in their 60s—were also in the vehicle.

Authorities said a search of the car revealed a significant number of documents, including maps, property title deeds, and materials linked to construction companies operating in the TRNC. The documents reportedly contained names of company directors and other sensitive information.

Further investigations revealed that the suspects had entered a holiday complex in Kalecik without permission and were seen inspecting the premises as well as an adjacent development. Residents notified authorities, and the suspects were caught in the act.

Police allege the group was gathering intelligence on properties in Northern Cyprus owned by Turkish Cypriots, as well as companies involved in their development. One of the suspects, Annie Kyprianu, was reportedly linked to Royal Estate, a real estate agency based in Kyrenia, from which she had obtained information on immovable properties in the north.

The suspects' mobile phones have been seized for forensic examination. Law enforcement emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages and involves serious allegations.

The five individuals—Andreas Kyprianu, Annie Kyprianu, Niki Gregoriou, Antonis Louca, and Gregory Gregoriou—appeared before the İskele District Court on Sunday. The court approved a three-day remand to allow police to continue their investigation into charges that include violating a military-restricted zone, unlawful entry, trespassing, and suspected espionage.

Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the suspects will face formal charges following the initial detention period.
