Drunk driver causes major traffic collision in Lefkoşa, causing ₺475,000 in damages

Lefkoşa, 22 July 2025 — A serious traffic accident involving multiple vehicles occurred in Lefkoşa after a driver under the influence of alcohol collided with four cars and a motorcycle, resulting in an estimated total of ₺475,000 in damages. 

The driver, identified as CA, a Nigerian student in north Cyprus was found to have an alcohol level of 258 milligrams.

According to police testimony, the incident took place on 21 July 2025 at approximately 19:35 on Şehit Mustafa Akdeniz Street when CA who was driving a sedan car, entered Şehit Ö. Muhtar Street carelessly while under the influence of alcohol and lost control of the vehicle.

During the maneuver, he struck the right side of a parked motorcycle belonging to İ.E.. Without stopping, CA driving and collided with three more parked cars: the right front side of a vehicle owned by K.G, the right and left sides of a vehicle, owned by M.A, and the left side of a vehicle, which was struck due to the force of impact pushing a vehicle belonging to E.B.

The police confirmed that no injuries occurred during the incident and reported a combined damage of ₺475,000. 

According to the police, CA has been residing in the country for the past three years under a student visa. With the police investigation concluded, the prosecution requested bail.

The judge released him on bail on the condition that he pay a bail cash of ₺400,000, banned from leaving the country, report to the police once a week.

The case has reignited public discussion on road safety and the enforcement of drunk driving laws in the TRNC.
