UNHCR warns of emerging displacement amid escalating tensions in Israel and Iran

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) issued a warning on Saturday, stating that escalating violence in Israel and Iran is already prompting population movements in both countries.

According to the agency, some residents of Tehran and other regions in Iran have begun crossing into neighboring countries to seek safety.

In Israel, intensified shelling has forced people to relocate within the country, with some even fleeing abroad in search of refuge.

As reported by the Associated Press, the UNHCR called on regional governments to uphold the right to asylum and ensure humanitarian access to those in need.

“This region has already endured more than its share of war, loss, and displacement — we cannot allow another refugee crisis to take root,” said Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Grandi emphasized the urgency of de-escalation, warning of the long-term impacts of forced displacement: “The time to de-escalate is right now. Once people are forced to flee, there’s no quick way back — and all too often, the consequences last for generations.”
