Turkish national detained for living illegally in northern Cyprus
A man who was found to have resided in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) without a valid residence permit for 261 days, has been taken into custody following a routine police check at Ercan Airport.
According to the police, the suspect named only as MY, a Turkish national was apprehended on the evening of June 25, 2025, at approximately 10:00 PM, during a control operation conducted at the arrivals exit of Ercan Airport. Authorities discovered that MY had been living in the country without proper documentation since July 10, 2024.
Following his detention, a formal investigation was launched. Police stated in court that a report regarding the incident would be submitted to the Ministry of the Interior and that deportation proceedings would be initiated. An extension of one day was requested to complete the necessary procedures.
Appearing before judge, MY explained that he had a valid student registration but was unable to complete his immigration procedures due to the illness of his brother, for whom he had to provide care.
After reviewing the testimony and case details, the judge ordered MY to be held in custody for one day as the investigation continues.
