Tottenham appoint Thomas Frank as new manager
Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Thomas Frank as their new head coach, marking their fifth full-time managerial change in just six years.
The former Brentford manager has signed a three-year contract, taking over from Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed despite guiding Spurs to Europa League glory last month.
Frank, 51, arrives at Spurs following a transformative six-year spell at Brentford, where he led the club into the Premier League and established them as a competitive top-flight side. Under his leadership, Brentford consistently punched above their weight, finishing in the top half twice and never being relegated.
“In Thomas, we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches in the game,” Tottenham said in a statement. “He has a proven track record of developing players and building strong squads. We’re excited to see him lead the team into the new season, especially with Champions League football ahead.”
Although Postecoglou ended Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought with their recent European triumph, a dismal Premier League campaign—where the club finished 17th with 22 losses—ultimately cost the Australian his job.
Frank’s coaching career began with Denmark’s youth national teams before managing Brøndby from 2013 to 2016. He joined Brentford as assistant manager in 2016 and took over as head coach in 2018 following Dean Smith’s departure. Brentford’s Director of Football, Phil Giles, praised Frank’s impact:
“Thomas understood our vision from day one. His tactical acumen, emotional intelligence, and leadership were vital to our transformation.”
During his Premier League tenure, Brentford finished 13th, 9th, 16th, and 10th. Known for high-tempo football and intelligent recruitment, Frank’s side scored 66 goals last season—more than all but four clubs. Players such as Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney, and David Raya were signed and later sold for significant profits, highlighting the club’s smart scouting under his leadership.
Forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, who combined for 39 league goals last season, are expected to attract interest from Tottenham this summer.
Frank is also known for his innovative approach, including strategic planning for kick-offs. Brentford scored inside the first 40 seconds of three consecutive games last season—a testament to his meticulous preparation.
“We always look to start on the front foot. Our kick-off routines are carefully designed and adapted game by game,” Frank explained previously.
Now, he takes on the challenge of revitalizing a Tottenham side with high expectations and a demanding fan base. A strong start will be crucial to winning over supporters, many of whom felt Postecoglou deserved more time.
Joining Frank at Tottenham will be several key members of his Brentford staff, including assistant coach Justin Cochrane, performance chief Chris Haslam, and analyst Joe Newton. Andreas Georgson, formerly of Manchester United, will also be part of his new backroom team.
