Syrian national detained for illegal entry into Northern Cyprus

Lefkoşa, 1 June 2025 — A Syrian national, has been remanded in custody for two days following his arrest for entering the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) through an unauthorized port of entry.

According to police reports, HA was apprehended at approximately 10:40 p.m. on May 31 during a routine patrol conducted by law enforcement officers in the Metehan Social Housing area in Lefkoşa. Officers identified him as a suspicious individual operating in a local business establishment. Upon investigation, authorities discovered that HA did not possess any legal documentation confirming his entry into the country.

During initial questioning, HA reportedly admitted to arriving in Northern Cyprus via an illegal maritime route. He stated that on May 30, 2025, he boarded a small boat from an unidentified coastal point near Antalya, Turkey, ultimately making landfall at an unauthorized location in the TRNC.

Following his arrest, a formal investigation was launched. The police officer who testified before the Lefkoşa District Court, confirmed the details of the arrest and emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages. Based on the presented evidence, the judge approved the request for a two-day detention to allow further inquiries.

HA faces charges related to unlawful entry under Northern Cyprus immigration laws. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether additional charges will be pursued as the investigation progresses.
