Severe heatwave sweeps Europe with temperatures reaching 40°C

A significant heatwave is affecting large areas of Europe, with temperatures expected to reach or exceed 40°C in multiple regions.

European health and meteorological authorities have issued warnings for dangerous conditions, particularly affecting vulnerable populations.

London temperatures may reach up to 35°C on Monday 30 June, potentially marking the hottest day of the year, according to international media reports. The UK Health Security Agency has issued an orange alert for southern and eastern England, whilst yellow warnings remain in effect for other areas including Yorkshire and the Midlands. The heat is expected to persist at least until Tuesday.

Spain faces similar conditions, with AEMET issuing an official warning for 2025’s first severe heatwave. Temperatures in Seville could reach 42°C, with seven provinces placed on alert. Hot air from North Africa is intensifying conditions, with elevated temperatures expected to continue into early next week.

France has placed four departments on orange alert today due to heatwave conditions. Temperatures in Montpellier and Montagnac are forecast to reach 38°C, whilst the Marseille and Aix-en-Provence areas approach 36°C. Meteorologists attribute the phenomenon to a “heat dome” trapping warm air.

Italy is experiencing extreme temperatures, with areas of Sardinia and southern Italy approaching 40°C.

Bloomberg reports that global warming contributes to the frequency and intensity of such events. Increased cooling demands are straining energy networks, whilst Electricité de France has warned of potential production reductions at nuclear plants due to river overheating.
