Police force on duty 24/7 during Eid al-Adha holiday to ensure public safety

Lefkosia – The Police General Directorate has announced that it will remain on duty around the clock throughout the Eid al-Adha holiday, ensuring continuous public safety and emergency response services.

In a statement emphasizing the importance of unity, love, respect, and tolerance during this special time, the Directorate reiterated its commitment to upholding peace and security.

“As the Police General Directorate, we have taken all necessary security measures to ensure our citizens can celebrate Eid al-Adha in a peaceful and safe environment,” the statement read.

Emergency lines available 24/7

In addition to regular patrols and preventive efforts, citizens were reminded that emergency lines—including 155 Police Emergency, 199 Fire Department, and 156 Narcotics—will remain operational 24/7 during the holiday period to respond to complaints and requests for assistance.

Fire and burglary precautions urged

With the holiday break expected to be extended for many, the Police warned the public to take precautions against potential fire hazards and burglaries in unattended homes and workplaces.

“When leaving your residence or business, ensure your security systems are functioning, surveillance cameras—if available—are active, and all doors and windows are securely locked. Also, unplug electrical devices and check sockets to minimize the risk of fire,” the statement advised.

Strict warning against drunk and speeding drivers

Anticipating heavier traffic over the holiday, authorities issued a strong reminder on safe driving practices, particularly against drunk and reckless driving.

“To protect your life and that of others, do not drive under the influence of alcohol. Use alternative transportation if necessary. Avoid speeding. Your priority should be to arrive safely and reunite with loved ones—not to race to your destination,” the Police emphasized.

The statement also highlighted the dangers of using mobile phones while driving, urging drivers to disconnect from all distractions that can lead to accidents. “Never forget that wearing a seatbelt saves lives, especially in serious crashes,” it added.

Seatbelt and child safety regulations

Referencing the Seatbelt Law, the Police reminded the public that children under the age of three are not permitted in vehicles that lack proper child safety seats. Children between 135 and 150 cm in height must be seated in the back seat with seatbelts fastened, while those under 135 cm must use an appropriately fitted child seat in the rear. Furthermore, children under 150 cm tall are prohibited from sitting in the front seat of motor vehicles.

Mandatory helmet use for motorcyclists

The Police also underscored the legal requirement for all riders and passengers of motorcycles, motor tricycles, mopeds, and ATVs to wear protective helmets for their own safety.

Concluding the statement, the Police General Directorate extended its warmest Eid al-Adha greetings to the public, wishing everyone a healthy, peaceful, and accident-free holiday.
