Outrage as video shows donkey being offered cigarette in Karpaz

A disturbing video circulating on social media has sparked public outrage after showing an individual attempting to offer a lit cigarette to a donkey in the Karpaz region. 

The director of Taşkent Nature Park, Kemal Basat, has strongly condemned the act, calling it a clear case of animal abuse and announcing that a formal complaint has been filed with the Karpaz Police Station.

In a public statement shared via social media, Basat emphasized that while the donkeys of Karpaz may roam freely, they are not without protection. “The donkeys in Karpaz may appear to be without owners, but they are not without guardians,” he said, adding that steps have been taken to involve the relevant authorities.

Reacting to the footage, Basat described his dismay: “We watched in disbelief as a person tried to light a cigarette and offer it to the donkey, which then swallowed it.” He confirmed that both the Department of Environmental Protection and the Veterinary Department have been informed about the incident.

Basat expressed hope that the perpetrator would be identified promptly and held accountable in a way that sets a precedent. “We trust that those responsible will be brought to justice swiftly and face a punishment that sends a clear message against such cruelty,” he stated.

The incident has reignited concerns about animal welfare in Northern Cyprus, prompting calls for stronger enforcement of animal protection laws and public awareness on humane treatment of animals.
