North Carolina governor declares June 14, 2025, as “Igbo day”
Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has officially proclaimed June 14, 2025, as “Igbo Day” across the state, recognizing the rich cultural heritage and significant contributions of the Igbo community to North Carolina’s social and economic development.
The proclamation, titled Igbo Day 2025 and published on the state government’s official website, honors the longstanding presence of the Igbo people—an ethnic group originating from Nigeria—who have made North Carolina their home for decades.
Governor Stein praised the community’s enduring legacy, noting that many Igbo families have lived in the state for over 50 years. “The Igbos are dedicated to upholding their cultural traditions from Nigeria, and their community continues to foster unity, connection, and pride,” the proclamation stated.
The governor also commended the Igbo community for their contributions across various sectors, including public service, education, health care, entrepreneurship, law, and information technology. Many Igbo residents serve in local, state, and federal government positions and are deeply involved in civic and charitable initiatives—ranging from volunteering in schools and supporting women’s shelters to organizing food drives and participating in environmental cleanups.
The proclamation also acknowledged the founding of the Igbo Day Festival Organization, a nonprofit established in 2022 to promote Igbo culture and provide educational outreach to both Igbo families and the broader North Carolina community. The organization hosted its first cultural festival on July 10, 2022.
Governor Stein highlighted the community’s efforts to pass down cultural values and traditions to future generations. “In recognition of their cultural impact, contributions to the economy, and commitment to community service, I hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as Igbo Day in North Carolina,” he announced. “I encourage all citizens to join in celebrating the vibrant heritage and enduring legacy of the Igbo people.”
The proclamation was officially signed and sealed at the North Carolina Capitol in Raleigh on May 21, 2025.
